 | | Abstract | Online "community" brings to mind employees chatting aimlessly; perhaps the furthest thing in the mind of a CEO is to implement such technologies within the enterprise. But online community tool have a place at the corporate table, and have already been proving themselves in an age where electronic proximity, not distance, impacts work. In fact, two online community tools are already prevalent: electronic mail and instant messaging. Other tools, such as discussion forums and collaborative workspaces, can foster conversation between workers, speeding products to market and directly impacting the bottom line. The necessity to bring these tools beyond the firewall, to collaborate with customers, suppliers and business partners, will be a key driver in 2003.
